This section is a Blood, Guts and Gore special detailing films with one or two B & G scenes notable enough to mention though the films they belong to don’t have enough to rate.

N THE ADDAMS FAMILY 0:53:36. This scene is a total guilty pleasure, I’ll admit. I saw this film first before I got into the original TV show and before even the sequel, Addams Family Values. It takes place in the school auditorium at a charming little play with elves, dancing flowers…and blood. Much, much blood. Buckets of it. Pugsley and Wednesday are engaged in a swordfight, all the while exchanging witty remarks a lá Shakespeare. Everything seems like it will be as expected, though, the very concept is complete anathema to the Addams. Everything must be stretched out to the furthest limits of weird and horrifying. This sweet, sunny little play is no different. Though it may have been goodness and child-friendly entertainment previously, when the Addams offspring take the stage, everything hits the fan. Pugsley takes a swipe at Wednesday’s wrist, drawing blood in a wild spray all over the floor between them. While Pugsley crows, Wednesday cuts off his left arm, the stump spurting red. All the while her wrist wound continues to spray, adding to the flow. Single-limbed but undeterred, Pugsley slashes Wednesday across the throat. Now spraying blood from two places, Wednesday turns toward the audience, spewing red all over the faces of the unfortunate theatergoers in front two rows. Everybody is shocked and disgusted – except for the Addams family, who give the morbid, twisted little act a standing ovation. While they cheer and clap, everyone else sits goggle-eyed and slack-jawed as the once-clean stage drowns in gallons of red stuff. N ANIMATRIX J 0:03:26. In The Second Renaissance, part one, an uprising robot tears a man’s head in half, due gore exploding like a squashed tomato. SR: SSSSS 0:05:18. In part two of the aforementioned, a man gets dropped on the back window of a car. SR: SSSSS (Year 2003; Directed by various; Starring n/a.)

N ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 TIME. TEXT. SR: SSSSSSSSSS (Year 1976; Directed by John Carpenter; Starring Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer.)

N The HOLE 1:38:32. In a fit of pique and mental exhaustion, Desmond's character smashes his best friend's head into solid concrete enough times that sufficient blood and brain loss to cause death have been suffered. SR: SSSSS (Year 2001; Directed by Nick Hamm; Starring Thora Birch, Desmond Harrington, Embeth Davitz.)

N DEAD CALM TIME. The conclusion to this film (yes, do not read this if you haven’t seen it), Hughie comes back from floating around in the water and starts trying again to kill Rae. John can see this only in silhouette and so grabs a flare gun and shoots through the sails straight at his head. When we’re afforded a shot through the hole to what’s happened, Hughie stands with the flare sizzling and smoking in his face like a human firework until he falls overboard. SR: SSSSS (Year 1988; Directed by Phillip Noyce; Starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, Billy Zane.)

N MYSTERY MEN 1:19:12. The diabolical world-destroying device of Casanova’s that Captain Amazing has been hooked up to (the psychofrakulator) falls into the well-meaning hands of the Mystery Men. In honest intentions of saving him, they flip a bunch of switches in haphazard fashion and end up doing the very thing they were trying to forestall. The machine activates and at once Captain Amazing’s face starts pulsing and flexing like the waxy substance in a lava lamp, breaking up and reorganizing in hideous malformations until he resembles more an alien than a human being. It happens again at 1:47:00 to Casanova himself when the team throws him into the works. SR: SSSSS (Year 1999; Directed by Kinka Usher; Starring Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy.)

N The OMEN 1:33:40. It’s like something out of Final Destination. After being told that he must kill Damien with seven knives to extinguish physical and spiritual life, he throws the bundle, refusing to be a part of it. The photographer promises that if Mr. Thorn won’t do it, he would. He rummages for the package while a truck that has just slipped off its emergency brake rolls toward him. It hits a bump in the road and a solid sheet of glass flies out of the back and severs his neck cleanly, his head bouncing along the glass plate while it continues through an adjacent window. N ONE HOUR PHOTO 0:59? Sy’s idyllic dream is starting to unravel. We see him in a pristine aisle of SavMart, standing alone with his eyes closed. When he opens them, his eyes are truly blood red, a drip running down from his right eye. A split-second later, he clasps his hands over his eyes and a torrent of blood washes out – then he wakes up. SR: SSSSS (Year 2002; Directed by Mark Romanek; Starring Robin Williams, Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan.)

N The RING 0:57:54. The Ring’s only B & G sequence echoes the terrible scene from The Cell in that it does something quite horrifying to a horse. This one was onboard a ferry, the same one Naomi Watts happened to be riding. Barely getting a chance to pet him, Naomi watches helplessly as it starts to freak out, jump around and eventually break out of the trailer. Running amok about the craft, it wildly heads for the water. Just barely missing a clean jump, the horse’s rear legs crash into the railing and he falls, slamming into the side of the boat, getting swept under and beaten against the craft by the current. Knowing where he’s headed, everyone rushes to the end of the boat where soon a pool of blood spreads like an oil slick, the horse evidently having been ground up by the boat’s propellers. The very idea of a horse not only hitting into the boat but also being diced into chum by the whirling blades is worth a point. The insane screaming by the little girl whose horse it was coupled with the blaring of the ferryboat’s horn adds to the grim mood. N STIR of ECHOES JJ 0:15:48. Tom gets his first red vision of a spat out bloody tooth and a broken-off fingernail. His own tooth breaks in half, a part of which he pulls from his jaw and drops into the sink. It was just a vision for him, however. We get a repeat of the events in their context at 1:20:47. SR: SSSSS 0:41:52. Tom gets another violent vision when he sees Adam turn a gun on himself and smear blood all over his face. SR: SSSSS (Year 1999; Directed by David Koepp; Starring Kevin Bacon, Katheryne Erbe, Illeana Douglas.)

N The TALENTED MR. RIPLEY J 0:56:00. The scene where Tom murders Dickie is a harsh one. In a fit of rage, Tom picks up an oar and breaks open the side of Dickie’s head. Blood flows like a tapped keg and tempers rise. Dickie attacks and attempts to strangle Tom at which point the latter fights him off and continues beating him with the oar until dead. He then lies with his body in the solid red blood/water mixture all in the bottom of the boat until he goes ashore and sinks the evidence. SR: SSSSS 1:26:00. When Tom kills Freddie, it isn’t pretty either, but at least he doesn’t lie with the body in an inch of bloody water – instead, he beats him to death with a bust he just took out of its box, whacking him twice until his skull cracks.
