Dracula

YEAR 1992 directed by francis ford coppola

STARRING anthony hopkins, winona ryder, gary oldman

Qs: 10.  AR: SSSSSSSSSS

N      0:04:58.  Dracula is understandably upset that his wife committed suicide and therefore would be eternally damned.  He jams the tip of his sword into the center of the cross at the altar.  Blood starts pouring from everywhere around on the cross itself, the eyes of the cherubim thereon, the candles sat about.  An ounce or so pours into a chalice that Dracula drinks heartily from.  Finishing it off, he drops the cup and steps back as a wild torrent of blood washes from the center of the cross.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:39:14.  A wolf-like creature takes a bite out of a man (or something similar, all we hear is mortal screaming), the red dripping from its fangs, a large swath of it splattering a sail.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:57:04.  Harker is held by Dracula’s demons of the pit that bleed him just enough to leave him alive but also to keep him from escaping.  Red trails leading down and away from him confirm this torturous fact.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:01:10.  Van Helsing and assistant pump blood from Lucy’s arm, collecting it in a vial.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:18:22.  The wolf attacks a man outside the castle, a bit of red splattering his hand.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:21:00.  Two great waves of red splash onto the scene while the wolf eats Lucy’s neck.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:27:13.  The undead Lucy vomits blood in Van Helsing’s face and on the side of her glass coffin, drops coming down from her lips.  In the same breath, Holmwood is encouraged to pound a stake into her heart, which he begrudgingly agrees to do.  While he’s hammering the stake in deeper, Van Helsing slices off her head and stands back while it flies through the air.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:52:30.  Van Helsing creeps into the lair of the demons of the pit and slices their heads off, blood splattering the wall.  He later carries them to a mighty deep ravine and throws them in.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:56:58.  Quincy slashes Dracula’s throat the second he emerges from his crate.  Another man lunges and stabs him in his chest and leaves the knife in him, the blood from his neck wound covering part of his face.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:59:30.  Forced to do something difficult for her, Mina rams the sword from Dracula’s chest all through to the brick below.  After watching him die, Mina whips the sword out and cuts off his head, thankful it’s over.  SR: SSSSS

Qs: 14.  AR: SSSSSSSSSS

N      0:03:24.  Hardly worth mentioning, a midnight morgue raid produces a severed hand.  We see the stump in better light at 0:05:13.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:05:25.  It gets really good in a hurry, namely when a doctor, performing a tutorial on the stomach (on the same body, it turns out, the hand was farmed from earlier) by of course slitting the skin open and probing around in the goods.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:09:24.  A good-sized puddle of I’m sure you can guess what grows a drop at a time as the source just above continues to leak.  Of course, that will happen when someone’s heart has been removed and his chest is in tatters.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:14:13.  Another corpse, another removed heart.  This time, the remover almost gets his teeth in before the jig’s up.  Naturally he can’t go to prison with the odor of cannibalism lingering around, so he leaps out a 7th or so-story window to his bloody death below.  Of course, the dummy they dropped is not the dummy who jumped out the window: watch and you’ll see an arm break off, but of course when we see him a few seconds later, he’s battered but still armed.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:17:27.  Here begins a bloody slideshow, which certainly aren’t photos of someone’s vacation.  A bloody body carved up like a turkey lies about, much organic matter quite visible.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:29:55.  How would you like to find a severed, maggot-infested, half-decomposed human head in your bed?  SR: SSSSS

N     0:36:30.  A search party turns into search and recover when the missing man is found, mutilated.  His right leg is missing below the knee, his left arm is missing, his right arm looks like it has been crushed and internal organs lie about.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:40:28.  Booby traps are unkind things, as one man discovers when he trips one and gets staked through the chest by a reed spike, one of many lashed together in a network like something out of Cannibal Holocaust.  Of course, his troubles are multiplied when his throat is slit, the spraying blood gleefully imbibed.  The situation’s direness gets squared when his guts are pulled out and distributed amongst the hungry crowd, each member chewing on a different organ.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:44:36.  What happens when you’re a native and you encroach upon an edgy anthropologist?  You get a machete in the head, right between the sides of the brain.  This of course may have been merely a diversionary tactic while another of their party gets impaled with at least a two-inch diameter shaft of bamboo.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:48:08.  Time runs out for George as he’s overtaken, backed up against a tree and eviscerated.  Things aren’t improved any when a native gouges out both of his eyes and…I’m sure you know what he does with them.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:58:23.  I try never to think I’ve seen it all, but I figured I’d been through the conceivable gamut of whirling killing machines, but I have to admit that a running outboard motor used to grind a Z’s head into absolute mush is something new.  Later, at 0:58:50, the movie answers a question that I honestly asked myself about two Qs ago: what happened to Susan?  We find her without her left eye and most of her teeth, looking like she’s aged about fifty years in the last hour.  When he removes the literally human wig, fresh off a scalp, he gets to the bottom of things: that’s not Susan.  The real deal is on an operating table, a pate-less and bloody head testament to her identity.  Very slowly, and very painfully I’d imagine, her blood is drained into a waiting beaker, her mouth having to be forcibly held open so as not to alert people who would save her by her fearful screaming.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:03:58.  The good doctor next retrieves a bone saw and skillfully cuts away the top of Susan’s skull, all while still conscious, I should add.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:04:46.  Peter and Lorrie (Peter Lorre?) find themselves in a morgue gallery, bodies situated upside-down and dangling from roof beams, every one a member of the recently departed, a little suspicious one would think that they all somehow ended up there together…  A little over a minute later when one of the reanimated gropes Lorrie, Peter hauls off with the big stick Teddy Roosevelt told him to carry and takes with it the creature’s nose and some random skin.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:17:00.  Our friendly M.D. takes the scalp clean off another body, the bloody skull visible as is the bloody skin cut away with the bloody hair.  SR: SSSSS

Dreamcatcher

YEAR 2003 directed by lawrence kasdan

STARRING morgan freeman, thomas jane, damian lewis

Qs: 7.  AR: SSSSSSSSSS

N     0:12:30.  Prof. Jones steps out into traffic (we find out why later) and is dramatically hit by a car.  He lives, of course, but the incident is striking nonetheless.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:41:40.  Jonesy and Beaver come back inside after attempting, fruitlessly, to summon help from the choppers.  There, they discover blood pools that they see shortly are footprints leading in a trail from the bedroom to the bathroom, red on the knob as well.  Tracing them back to the source in the bedroom, they find the sheets where he laid only moments ago a bloody mess.  At 0:43:38 an appreciably tense sequence occurs in the drama that was the bathroom.  A red fungus is on absolutely every surface in the place, climbing up the walls and across the floor, spreading on the sink and all over Rick’s face.  Everywhere that the fungus isn’t, blood is: leading from Rick’s #2 area, on the sink, down the walls, across the floor, all up and down the shower curtain – everyplace in fact from where the fungus started spreading.  It’s a gruesome sight and a macabre sequence considering the environment.  Fed up with the indecision as to whether or not Rick’s still alive, Beaver pushes his shoulder vigorously, enough apparently to push him off the can.  A fundamentally unpleasant sight of a man’s behind is amplified by the fact that there seems to be a hole bored through it (conspicuously larger but in the same place as…), blood just everywhere.  Plus, something’s in the toilet and it’s not happy.  Thinking they’ll tape the lid down and run, Beaver sits on the creature while Jonesy runs to the shed to find the tape.  Before he dashed out, Beaver reached for his psychological relaxant: toothpicks.  The creature, however, picked the very moment when he was reaching for the container to thump, throwing the toothpicks all across the bloody fungus infested floor – save two that fortuitously landed in a clean spot.  The tension in the sequence comes from his repeated efforts to reach just one of them (only an inch or two, maybe, past him), the creature thumping with each shot.  Beaver’s luck, however, eventually runs out.  On what was to be the last reach, the creature gives it its all, tossing Beaver off the can and onto the floor.  Getting a glimpse of the creature for the first time, Beaver has no time to think when it lashes out at him.  He soon figures out what happened – the creature bit off all four fingers from his right hand.  It then lunges at him, knocking him off his feet.  Just as Jonesy returns with the tape, the creature bites down into Beaver’s face.  SR: SSSSS

N      JFF: at 0:51:19 are two of the ugliest feet I have ever seen.  Granted they’re an alien’s, they’re still incredibly unsightly.

N     0:57:46.  Summoning Maples, Col. Abraham asks him to give the Boy Scout, three-finger salute.  When he does, Kurtz shoots him in the hand, leaving him with about three fingers.  As Maples is escorted out, Kurtz wipes up the blood.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:00:20.  Back at camp with Pete and the lady they nearly ran down, the shot pans past her #2 area which was apparently burst out of by one of the same creatures that ate its way through her husband Rick, leaving a bloody trail in the snow.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:11:32.  Henry returns to the cabin to discover what a bloody, fungus-ridden mess it had become.  He arrives in time to watch some of the fungus growing around their Dreamcatcher.  As he continues to look around, he sees that almost the entire place, practically every square inch, is thoroughly covered with the crawling growth.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:27:12.  The alien that disguised itself in Jonesy rears up and bites Pete in half.  SR: SSSSS

N     1:59:47.  Henry and Duddits come across Owen, shot and killed in the snow by a crazed and over-the-edge Col. CurtiseHenryHen.  SR: SSSSS

Qs: 16.  AR: SSSSSSSSSS

N      0:14:52.  Reno watches a man appear from nowhere, stab a man in the back and flee just as quick, a little red showing on his coat.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:24:49.  It’s quick, so pay attention: for about three seconds Reno gets a freak vision of himself covered in blood, flinging droplets from his hair onto the already covered walls.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:31:53.  The super opens a cabinet to reveal a skinned rabbit, held up by its bound ankles.  By the light of several candles (inadvertently making it look like a bizarre ritualistic sacrifice), Reno guts it and cuts off one of the rear legs before almost sensuously running the blade lightly down the rabbit’s body from the head down and back up.  He then shows a marginal increase in intensity when he bears down a little harder on the blade as he runs it across its head again.  Studying it like it was an abstruse mystical text, he pulls back his arm and jams the tip through the rabbit’s head and into the table a total count of nineteen times, sixteen visible, three with just the sound.  SR: SSSSS

N       0:36:03.  Hearing his name called dozens of times by somebody, Reno thinks he sees Carol, but as she turns around, she has no eyes, thin trails of blood leading down her cheeks.  After her is his previous vision at 0:24:49 of him soaked with blood on the corner of a room somewhere.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:37:20.  Reno claims his first driller victim, burying the bit into a derelict’s chest, blood spurting as he continues to rev the motor and push the bit deeper and faster, the pool spreading around him as he twitches.  Tearing his chest up a fair bit, red starting to seep from his victim’s mouth and nose, Reno decides his fix has been satisfied and he leaves the gruesome scene.  SR: SSSSS

N       0:38:29.  A shot of the rabbit’s guts in the trashcan.  SR: SSSSS

N       Here Reno launches on an all-out marathon:

N      0:50:11.  Reno attacks his next victim, knocking him to the ground before starting to drill him in the head at 0:50:28.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:52:34.  Reno drills a fourth in an alley (we see only the legs of his third behind a support pillar at the subway earlier, but we didn’t see the killing).  He buries the bit in the chest, watching as he slides down the wall, jittering as he slowly dies.  SR: SSSSS

N     0:55:34.  Exactly three minutes later he drills his fifth at a bus stop, jamming the bit between two of the sheets of Plexiglas in the booth.  He keeps up the drilling, his body convulsing violently, until precisely 0:56:00 when he runs off to find another.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:56:20.  Reno claims his sixth a stone’s throw from the Empire State Building.

N      0:56:21.  He finds his next two at a corner, jabbing the drill under a garbage picker’s ribs before playing around with the second, dancing to one side and the other around a pole before running down and killing him.

N     0:58:25.  Reno sat coolly running the motor for a few seconds before going Phantasm on his ninth, boring into his head above his right eye, maintaining pressure for at least 20 seconds, holding constant while the man bleeds down his face and screams his last.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:01:40.  A flashback of Reno’s first victim followed by his blood-drenched corner.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:11:23.  Reno corners #10, a real animal, and somehow tacks his hands to the walls in a pseudo-crucifixion scene before teasing him for a few seconds and finally drilling him to death.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:20:27.  Reno’s persistent vision of himself covered in blood in the corner of a room comes back, this time longer and complete with drill.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:22:45.  A quick shot of what I’m fairly certain is the bloody rabbit’s head in a cloth.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:26:48.  When he relentlessly assailed Reno’s buffalo painting, we knew that was it for Briggs.  At the mark Pamela starts back to the apartment, finding a curious gash in the door through which what looked like blood was flowing.  Opening the door, she finds Briggs pinned to it, torn to shreds by Reno’s longer and wider king drill bit.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:29:20.  Reno picks off his 11th, his first non-bum (one of his artist “friends”), plunging the bit deep into his back, leaving him to die in a terrible mess of blood that looks like someone shattered a bottle of ketchup.  SR: SSSSS

Qs: 4.  AR: SSSSSSSSSS

N      0:06:37.  Two poor souls at the titular drive-in are making out as was customary at such places then.  The guy reaches out of the car, desperately yearning to hear the picture for a change, and gets his head lopped right off.  Somewhat cheesy effects, but it gets the point across.  As a bonus, we get to see the bloody neck where the head was, and the head itself on the pavement.  His girl screams, naturally, but doesn’t get long before the same blade that instantaneously took the life of her date drives through her neck, not laterally like his, but through-and-through.  She clutches her throat and slowly falls backwards out the door, hanging off the end of the front seat, bleeding down herself.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:25:20.  The killer does a twofer, two birds with one stone, two lovers with the same blade.  Through the back of the guy, into the girl.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:51:54.  An upset man, irritated that his date came to the movie to see the movie and not neck, returns to the car later to find her headless body in the seat, right where he left her.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:52:14.  The Inspectors find another man, throat slit, left to die in his car.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:14:40.  The motel owner molests the new arrival for a few minutes before throwing her out on the back deck and stabbing her viciously with a pitchfork eight or nine times.  The mark is when the red, which soaks the boards thereafter, shows up during the attack.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:22:55.  The family dog provides a quick snack for the gators.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:37:00.  While daddy goes to “slay the dragon,” our friendly motel owner gets other ideas, one of them being to attack him with a scythe several times.  He gets ready to move in for the kill, but his crocs have even another idea: burst through the fence and eat him alive.  SR: SSSSS

N      1:01:18.  The man who inquired about the first victim we see the motel owner take down gets a scythe through the neck, stumbling around with the blade in his body for a long time before collapsing but still not dying.  The motel owner fights with the man to pull the metal out of his neck at the same time that the crocs are doing their best to pull him in.  Eventually, both win – the scythe tears free from his neck and the crocs get their meal.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:06:52.  Brothers Dale and Melvin drop by Ed’s while their parents are out.  Poking around where he shouldn’t be, Dale screams his head off when the door shuts behind him and he sees hanging from it a human head almost at the same second a rat runs across the floor.  When he screams, Melvin and Ed run upstairs to see what the trouble was.  Dale comes out with it that there were rats and heads on the door.  Ed shows the children his trio of heads, feeding them a line about them being curiosities sent from the South Seas.  The real heads aren’t the only fascinations he has – two masks made from human faces hang on one wall, a lamp made from a spinal column propped up on a pelvic bone and a femur (likely from the same person) sits on the nightstand and the tops of skulls adorn the posts of the bed.  The rating is based not only on what appears to be relatively fresh blood on the first head Dale sees, the lowest hanging one, but the stark freakishness of the scene.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:14:13.  Ed’s parents are in their cellar, cleaning out a pig.  Blood flows like a river from the body while his dad steadies it as his mother scoops out the organs.  SR: SSSSS

N      0:42:33.  Ed was psychotic, but he wasn’t subtle.  After shooting Mary after-hours and dragging her, dazed and traumatized, to his truck, he lays her out on his bed, a patch of blood having soaked into her clothes in the while since the bar.  At the mark Ronnie comes back to the bar to see blood drops strewn all about outside the door and a path where he dragged her on the floor inside.  SR: SSS
